Early life and family

Nickolas Markovic grew up in Menawah, a small town 130 miles north of Rivertown on the shores of Lake Lawrence. He won a full-ride scholarship to play football at Markane State University, a Division II school located in the southernmost portion of Rivertown South. A gifted athlete and studious scholar, Markovic's college career was terminated by the superflu and the collapse of civilized society.

His car stalled out and he abandoned it, fleeing a group of scavengers planning to strip it and him of any valuables. During his flight he ran into two families fleeing to what one man, a private security guard, described as a safehouse. Tall and fit, Markovic cut an intimidating figure so he was invited to join them at the location that would eventually be called the Rock, the birthplace of the MPD.

Though he had no military training, Markovic quickly learned how to fire a gun and be a proper soldier. He was singled out for high praise during Project Reclamation. In 2098, when MPD ranks began to take shape, Augustus Reichman picked Markovic to be one of his appointed sergeants, a position he has held ever since.

Disposition and traits

Markovic is a matter-of-fact kind of guy who always seeks to go about his business with the least amount of fuss possible. He enjoys the company of others though he usually says little himself. He leads by example and believes that the MPD can overcome any challenge if all the guards are of one mind and working as a coordinated team. As a result, the constant behind-the-scenes bickering between the Families seems, to him, to be counterproductive but he trusts his superiors to know what they are doing.

In his spare time, he reads 20th century adventure novels from his personal collection and plays an old banjo.

Goals and motivations

Though he would never admit as much publicly, Markovic is tired of being a sergeant in the MPD and dearly wants a transfer to an administrative position, preferably in Inventory. He believes he has served the organization well for over 25 years, many of those in his role of sergeant where he was privvy to many Family secrets and machinations. Now as he approaches 50 years of age, the physical demands of the job have worn on him and he's begun to feel a bit jaded with the latest rounds of posturing by the Family members over the future of the organization. He had spoken to Reichman about retiring his sergeantship shortly before Reichman's unexpected death and they had agreed to postpone the conversation. Now, with Reichman's wife Frederika assuming the position of head of state, Markovic feels it would be unfair to add her long list of headaches.

He also fears a change in the power structure might leave him in the lurch as he would be seen as loyal to the Reichmans, so he would like to get his future settled and take a less visible position before that might happen.

Primary residence

Markovic splits time between Summerland and Mansion Inn, where he keeps a humble room. His family, a wife and three kids, live in the Marcus District at Summerland. He travels between the two locations several times a week.

Attributes and Abilities

Markovic has kept himself in excellent shape by keeping a strict exercise routine and is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to his physical ability. He is a good shot with both handguns and rifles and can still soundly defeat men half his age in boxing contests. What he's lost in speed and strength due to aging he has made for in tactics and strategies. As someone who regularly travels through the city's dangerous downtown several times a week and has done so for 20 years, he is exceptionally good at staying alive. Many scavengers have tried attacking him over the years and very few have landed as much as a single blow.
