Rifles are similar to machine guns but are lightweight, portable, and fire from a smaller magazine. The most popular rifles found in Rivertown, which are based on the M16 and AK-47, fire a 5.56mm round.
Rifles can be modified with scopes, larger magazines, barrel swaps, and changing the weapon's stock.
Rifles are very useful for scavengers and MPD alike due to their lightweight design. Enemies (or potential enemies) can be disabled from a distance and put down with a single, aimed shot. Rifles are relatively easy to use even for novices, and the semi-automatic function allows for bursts of fire.
Scavengers lucky enough to possess a rifle will often perch in one spot for days at a time, waiting for another unfortunate scavenger to come into range. Because compatible rounds are not easily found, scavengers must shoot sparingly to conserve ammunition.
Rifles are rarely found in ruins, but they were a popular item in the years leading up to the superflu, though not nearly as popular as handguns. Ammunition can be found more often, but both the guns and the ammunition are very valuable.
A semi-automatic rifle is assigned to MPD guards who pass a marksmanship test.
