Machine guns are large and heavy and have a high rate of fire and capable of causing great damage to targets, human or otherwise. They are normally fired from a mounted position. Ammunition is fed either by way of a belt or a large magazine.
Though machine guns are portable, they are cumbersome to carry and cannot be fired without some significant set up. Only strong individuals can travel effectively with a machine gun and usually only for short distances.
Machine guns are almost exclusively mounted and used for fortifying a location; automatic machine guns are a common feature of some high-end security systems protecting businesses and private homes, although some of these automatic systems fire non-lethal rubber bullets.
Such heavy guns are also difficult to use for an inexperience operator, as the gun tends to pull away from the target after repeated firing and can overheat.
Find heavy caliber machine guns is very rare, as is their ammunition. The MPD owns several functioning machine guns in Greater Rivertown are at the Rock (8 mounted around the walls with several machine guns in their arsenal), Summerland (6 around perimeter), Ol' Federal and its inventory (4), Tombstone (2), and Whitefish (2).
Barnum's Bazaar has machine guns in its towers. There are several on display in the showroom but their price puts them out of reach for virtually all scavengers.
