Michael Miller (born 4 March 2050) is a research scientist from H+XTROPY lab.

Early life and family

Michael Miller grew up in an affluent suburb of Sauklund, where he showed an accelerated aptitude for chemistry and biological sciences. He won a series of scholarships to attend University of Sauklund, where he landed a number of undergraduate research grants. He was involved in a number of graduate research projects but never completed enough coursework to obtain a degree. Despite this he received a number of job offers from large pharmaceutical companies, only to turn them down in favor of a leadership position at a newly formed experimental sub-lab.

H+XTROPY lab operated under a dencentralized management model in which Miller reveled. He and his partner Solomon Madison enjoyed the playground atmosphere of the lab, freely experimenting with science and social arrangements. The glow faded when an experiment nearly took the life of their younger friend Kenneth Heppe and serious discussions about returning topside were underway when the superflu struck, forcing them to cut off contact with the outside world. In the years that followed, Miller began doubting the worth of a transhumanist future in the face of a worldwide catastrophe. Along with Madison, Heppe, and Marlon Simmons, he created a new drug called jack that was intended to help users forget about their bleak environment.

In 2112, with the jack experiment finished, he headed out with Madison to settle in their own mini sub-lab together in peace. However Madison was jumped by scavengers and sustained a fatal injury in the struggle, condemning Miller to a life alone.

Disposition and traits

For much of his life, Miller was a passionate and optimistic man, which led to his early successes. Now the youthful glow has faded and Miller became more contemplative and sober. He likes to lose himself in music and is a proficient violin and fiddle player, and took great solace in poetry.

Since the death of his partner, Miller has fallen into a deep depression and spends all of his time in a jack-induced fantasy.

Goals and motivations

Miller was dedicated to finding new ways for society to be more equal, compassionate, and caring. This was his life's work, and was interrupted forever by the superflu. The global disaster broke his spirit and he has been jaded about H+XTROPY labs' projects ever since.

His only goal and motivation was to live out his life in relatively happiness with his soul mate, but that was taken from him. As a result, he has no real goals, motivations, or desire to live.

Primary residence

Miller lives in a small sub-lab a few miles west of the H+XTROPY labs.

Attributes and Abilities

Miller is extremely intelligent and excels in all manner of mathematical and logic puzzles. He is also deft with his hands and likely would have been an excellent surgeon or concert pianist. A naturally slim man, Miller stretches and does calisthenics daily to keep fit but at age 63 he has limited physical strength and endurance. He has had no formal training in combat or self-defense.
