An improvised explosive device (IED) is a homemade bomb.

IEDs vary in shape and size, but tend to be about the size of a fist, or were in pipes. Descriptions of how to build IEDs proliferated on the Internet in the 2080s, describing how users could buy combinations of easily obtainable objects and construct small but powerful bombs. This included jellied gas bombs meant for throwing (see grenade) or stationary bombs that would exploded at a given time or during a specific event, such as stepping on it or breaking a tripwire.
IEDs tend to be tightly packed bits of metal and glass around an exposive core. When detonated, the bomb sprays shrapnel in a radius of roughly 20 feet. IEDs are used in Rivertown to protect a specific location from attack or intrusion.
IEDs are now rare in Rivertown due to the fact that the materials and instructions for how to make them have mostly disappeared. However, many IEDs were created and set in the 2090s by sufferers of the secondary strain of the superflu; few IEDs will have lasted the twenty years since and still be active, but particularly well-crafted bombs sheltered from the elements can still be active.
