Grenades are generally circular or ovular in shape, though others are bottle-shaped. The user pulls a pin (or sometimes lights a fuse) to start a short countdown to detonation, usually only a few seconds. The projectile is hurled at a target and then explodes.
Grenades can be used for a number of purposes, but most often as part of some offensive military maneuver or attack. The types of grenades witnessed in Rivertown include:
Sting grenades were used regularly as a way to disperse rioters in the years of social unrest preceding the superflu epidemic. Rioters often used homemade chemical grenades to torch buildings and wound police. The chemical grenade was responsible for many of the great fires that swept through Rivertown, destroying whole neighborhoods.
Grenades are very rare in Rivertown, with the largest supply kept in the arsenal in the basement of the Rock, and a smaller cache at the Tombstone. Finding them by scavenging in the ruins almost never happens.
In the early days of Project Reclamation, each MPD guard received an allotment of frag grenades. Due to a rapidly diminishing supply and swelling ranks, the MPD stopped this procedure and collected the grenades. Now only authorized special ops are allowed to use grenades.
