SUBJECT: Your Pele's Tears Transcript
<SM 20:44> Hello.
<GM 20:44> Ready to get started?
<SM 20:45> Yes.
<GM 20:45> Okay. Let me paste this:
<GM 20:45> After your march up Mansion Inn you had a few cold days that passed without incident. Until last night, when there was quite a commotion. Your partner guarding the front gate heard a noise and switched on the spotlight. He swept the rubble across the street from the Mansion and saw something in the rubble. You wanted to sound the alarm as protocol dictates but he wanted to check it out himself for some reason. Once he crossed the street you decided to sound the alarm anyway, to summon help. In the rubble they found two people, a dying MPD officer and a young woman who, if the rumors sweeping the Mansion were to be believed, was an heiress to the Reichman throne. Your partner was reassigned and you, as part of a six-man squad, were called back to Summerland. That's a change in routine; you don't like changes in routine. You're woken by a squad mate, shower in ice-cold water, dress, and report for your journey south.
<SM 20:48> Cool. I need to roll for my sanity though.
<GM 20:48> Yer what?
<SM 20:50> I must have talked about this with Bryce
<SM 20:50> Meli's not right in the head. I roll 1d10 every day to see if how sane he is. 1 is really, really looney, 10 is like you or me.
<SM 20:50> Or me, anyway.
<GM 20:51> Sure.
<SM 20:51> [ 8 ]
<GM 20:51> ;)
<SM 20:52> It's a good day!
<GM 20:52> OK. There are 3.5 miles btwn Mansion Inn and Summerland. We roll for encounters every mile.
<SM 20:54> OK
<GM 20:55> The first mile down through Rivertown North...
<GM 20:56> Nothing. Birds chirping, squirrels running in the trees. No activity anywhere, just the sounds of boots marching on the pavement.
<GM 20:57> As you enter the northern part of Rivertown Central...
<GM 20:57> Okay give me a second...
<SM 20:57> Action?
<GM 20:59> In the street you see a lean-to constructed against a building. Scavengers do this kind of thing all the time, and it's what your squads will tear down during regular sweeps. But this isn't a regular sweep and the CO told you all to be on high alert; other guards were saying that there had been a series of ambushes on guards lately, so you can feel the tension in the air when the CO orders you to slow.
<SM 21:03> Can't we go around?
<GM 21:03> That's the CO's call and he's ordered you to slow down.
<GM 21:04> The problem is that it's impossible to tell how many scavengers might be inside and if they have any weapons. There could be a dozen, two, or none. They could have flamethrowers or toothpicks for weapons. You just don't know/
<SM 21:04> Flamethrowers?
<GM 21:05> Exaggerating. But they could have automatic weapons.
<GM 21:06> Just a sec.../
<GM 21:06> You see a single ragged guy stumble out from somewhere behind the lean-to toward a steel barrel where, you would guess, there's a fire burning. He's got a long coat on and long straggly hair.
<SM 21:07> Does he have a weapon?
<GM 21:07> Doesn't look like it, but how can you be sure?
<SM 21:07> I take aim.
<GM 21:08> Your CO shouts at him to put his hands up and tells you to keep your sights on the hovel in case a whole group of scavengers come streaming out. He seems very tense.
<SM 21:08> I am at the lean-to then
<SM 21:08> *aim
<GM 21:09> The guy doesn't seem to hear so the CO shouts again.
<GM 21:09> THIS time he looks over and about shits himself seeing a half-dozen MPD aiming guns at him. Looks like he might try to run but then he thinks better of it and puts his hands up.
<GM 21:10> DON'T SHOOT! he shouts a couple times.
<GM 21:10> The CO tells him to drop to the ground with his hands on his head.
<SM 21:10> Any movement in the lean-lo?
<GM 21:10> And he does.
<GM 21:10> No.
<SM 21:11> Now what?
<GM 21:11> That's the question the CO seems to be asking himself. This is all very unusual.
<GM 21:11> Normally you'd storm in and wreck the place, confiscate their goods, and get out.
<SM 21:12> I yell to the sarge what do we do
<GM 21:12> That's kind of out of character for you, innit?
<SM 21:13> I guess :(
<GM 21:14> The CO orders you to back out slowly and head down two blocks over. He gives the command and you fall out.
<SM 21:14> Why?
<GM 21:14> Let's talk about it later. Let's keep going.
<GM 21:15> The last mile south, no encounters...
<GM 21:15> Wait thoughh,
<GM 21:16> Just as you're rounding the last bend to get to SUmmerland you find three skinny, mangy dogs roaming in the street. They give you one long look and then lope away.
<SM 21:17> heh, lope
<GM 21:17> :)
<SM 21:18> So what was the deal with pulling out?
<GM 21:18> Wait a sec...
<GM 21:18> At Summerland you're all absorbed into different watches and word comes down that a lockdown will be announced in the next 24 hours, banning movement between the MPD bases and all guards are on high alert. Of course, there are no further details given.
<SM 21:20> Wow. So why did we pull out rather than killing that guy?
<GM 21:21> Probably shouldn't say, but the CO was under orders to fire no shots unless absolutely necessary. Your squad was not to engage.
<SM 21:22> Hmm. Wonder what's going on.
<GM 21:23> HAve to wait and see!
<SM 21:23> Guess so. That it?
<GM 21:24> Umm...
<GM 21:25> Let's say yes. That fine?
<SM 21:26> Sure. Hey look the next couple weeks aren't looking great for me.
<SM 21:26> Don't know if there's much I can do about it
<GM 21:27> OK, just keep me posted. We can work around it.
<GM 21:27> Better to know than be guessing.
<SM 21:28> Will do. Bye now,
<GM 21:29> Bye
