Fireside Fancies of a Pipe DreamerAh, poor Frederika! It was fun to see the world through her eyes and just be crabby about everything. As time went on, I realized that she really was a fitting character for a game master to play through since the GM is both the one who has all the power in the game world, but also none of it because you need the players to make decisions to see how the world evolves and changes.

Frederika’s cluelessness is actually a cipher for my own confusion about where the whole plot was going. All I know is that Ellen wanted to be playing shoot ‘em ups so we sent her off into the wastes to dig up some sub-labs when Bryce tells me she finds Delia Reichman, and I’m like, “Wait a minute, who the hell is Delia Reichman? I didn’t know that Frederika had any kids,” but within an afternoon we had Rudy, Abby, Katrina, and of course Delia all worked out. I thought maybe the kids would play a bigger role in the narrative but I never found a way to bring them in without making it feel forced. No big loss.

I think what struck me as being most funny was trying to make sense of this convoluted plot as we quite literally made it up as we went along, and of course Bryce wasn’t helping when he started throwing curve balls like David at me. So suddenly we have cyborgs in this world? When the hell did that happen? But we agreed at the onset that if someone introduces it into the world, it exists. Well, I showed him two can play at that game with Delia! Surprisingly, I think it makes enough sense at the end but only if you look at it from a distance.

What happens next? I don’t see Frederika being long for this world. Right now she’s reacting instead of acting and she just can’t get her head around the fact that things have changed in ways she can’t control. She’s going to step on a roller skate at the top of a stairway or eat some bad peaches that may or may not have been laced with poison, I can just feel it. I wouldn’t put anything past Katrina. I really don’t know how she’d react to Barrett Lukowski’s news about Carlo Reyes. Would she even believe him? But what do they do? Declare war on Whitefish? Probably, knowing Frederika’s nature.

Overall I wanted to write a character I didn’t like but who was at least interesting. I hope I succeeded.
