Sorry, Betsy Macguffin does not change much over the course of the campaign! She started out as being selfish and anti-social and she ends up being selfish and anti-social. In truth I didn’t have a great idea of what Betsy was supposed to be doing in the story, but once I created her I realized it did help me (and hopefully both of us Trent) understand the political side of the MPD and how things worked behind the scenes.
I see Betsy as having this kind of suburban attitude, where everyone’s life could be just like hers if they were smart enough and hard enough working, but they aren’t so screw ‘em! As we worked through (and dodged around) central questions pertaining to how this world worked and how the MPD governed, I did come back to this central idea that it would be incredibly frustrating for anyone who had lived through the apocalypse, especially as an adult, because you’d always be thinking about the good ol’ days when things were actually quite good. I don’t think it would be as hard for the Postens, Ellens, Eriks, et al because they would have been pretty little when it all came crashing down and not really known the difference, whereas Frederika and Otto already had families at that point. I thought it would be fun to have Betsy have a foot in both worlds, having this sense of privilege but also being really disgusted with the world she eventually discovers.
Betsy could care less about the MPD or Frederika or anyone else. She wants to be doing important work and if that means calling in the feds to take over and ship her somewhere, anywhere but Rivertown, that’s fine by her. She is always looking out for number one, though her relationship with the Reichman family would be interesting pursue given the way her narrative thread ends. Could she actually bring the MPD down? Inquiring minds want to know.
